The Itch Background

This international and ESL Coffee House, the ITCH, has been in operation for the past eight years for international learners new to Canada. In this informal, social setting in a variety of learning spaces, such as a restaurant, a learning center, and a library conference room, newcomers have learned English and learned about Canada, from other community volunteers. For the past three years we have been meeting in Trent University's former Peter Robinson College now called Sadleir House. It has proven to be a warm and friendly location for the Coffee House. Over these past eight years, many have been helped through informal learning in these settings. Self-confidence has blossomed, new language skills have developed, students have met with members of the community, and new lives in Canada have begun with every promise of success perhaps increased by these rather delightful, very informal, meeting spaces. Informal learning is at least as successful as formal courses as an alternative to help newcomers learn their way into Canada. If you are interested in coming to the ITCH or being a part of the ITCH, Contact Us, and we will respond to you!
